THM Sponsors Ohio History Day Awards

OHD 2018As a co-sponsor and supporter of Ohio History Day, the Toledo History Museum (THM) sponsored a $100 award for one student in both the Junior Division (grade 7 & 8) and the Senior Division (high school) from Region 1 who showed proficiency in the use of primary sources in their essay or website projects.

The Ohio History Day Region 1 contest was held at Bowling Green State University on March 3, 2018.

This is one of several partnerships between THM and other regional organizations that serves to encourage history education in the Toledo region. Over 300 middle and high school students presented their research, with the winners heading to state and perhaps national rounds of competition. THM's participation was coordinated by Tedd Long and Renee Jayne, THM Trustees who also served as judges for the event.

"This is a major part of THM's commitment to history education in our region," said Mr. Long.  "For middle and high school students who participate, Ohio History Day sparks critical thinking, and helps develop skills in research and analysis, writing, and public speaking. Working solo or in small groups, students create original documentaries, exhibits, performances, research papers or websites exploring a breadth of historical topics within an annual theme. Students progress through competitions at the school, district, state, and national levels. Students from public, private, home, and cyber schools participate in this important contests.  District contests are held throughout Ohio every February and March."

This year's winners of THM's awards were:

  • Megan Schermond, an 8th grade student from Pike Delta York Middle School, who won the THM award for her paper, “Excerpts From the Diary of Betty Parris: A Girl in the Midst of the Conflict During theSalem Witch Trials.”
  • Elijah Comer, 9th grade and Riley Duncan 10th grade students from Toledo Early College won the THM award for their team project in the senior division of the group website category. Their project was titled, “The Conflict and Compromise of 1835: Ohio vs. Michigan.”

Conflict and Compromise was the theme of this year’s contest. National History Day guidelines also based judging of each submission on historical quality, relationship to the theme, and clarity of presentation for each category.

Congratulations to the 2018 THM Ohio History Day Region 1 Awardees and thank you to all who support THM to help make our co-sponsorship possible.
